Together, we make a difference in the lives of hundreds who count on Family Y financial assistance to afford the life-changing programs offered by the Y. Through our Annual Campaign, we raise a portion of the funds to ensure that no one is turned away for the inability to pay. Your donation means that people like Alicia Gibb is able to be a part of the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program and the Steiner Branch Family Y.
The year 2009 will always be a turning point in Alicia Gibb’s life. At age 28, with a husband and 2-year-old daughter, Alicia experienced a swollen gland that started an avalanche of health complications. Within a week, she was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma, a cancer affecting the lymphatic system. Alicia fought for her life for four months in the hospital where she suffered multiple set-backs and complications. She underwent seven months of chemotherapy and multiple surgeries, including brain surgery. When she eventually went home, she was in a wheelchair, unable to talk, walk or care for herself or her family. She had to relearn basic skills in two years of intensive Occupational and Physical Therapies.
In the spring of 2013, a family member recommended Alicia learn more about the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program offered at the Marshall Family Y, which charges no fee to participants thanks to funds raised through the Annual Campaign. Alicia had such a positive experience in the 12-week program that she realized that she wanted to join the Family Y staff and make an impact on others. Alicia’s smiling face greats visitors to the Steiner Branch Family Y in Grovetown now.
“The LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program gave me confidence about my physical abilities and encouraged me emotionally and spiritually, as well. I began feeling more like myself—not limited by my disabilities or feeling defined by my cancer. I love my Family Y family!”
